UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR GEOLOGICAL SURVEY A Literature Review of Interaction of Oxidized Uranium Species and Uranium Complexes with Soluble Organic Matter by
نویسندگان
چکیده
Organic material is commonly found associated with uranium ores in sandstone-type deposits. This review of the literature summarizes the classes and separations of naturally occurring organic material but the emphasis is on soluble organic species. The main class of materials of interest is humic substances which ars high-molecularweight complex molecules that are soluble in alkaline solution. These humic substances are able to solubilize (make soluble) minerals and also to complex [by ion exchange and (or) chelation] many cations. The natural process of soil formation results in both mineral decomposition and element complexing by organic species. Uranium in solution, such as ground water, can form many species with other elements or complexes present depending on Eh and pH. In natural systems (oxidizing Eh, pH 5-9) the uranium is usually present as a complex with hydroxide or carbonate. Thermodynamic data for these species are presented. Interacting metals and organic materials have been observed in nature and studied in the laboratory by many workers in diverse scientific disciplines. The results are not easily compared. Measurements of the degree of complexation are reported as equilibrium stability constant determinations. This type of research has been done for Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, Mg, Ca, Al, and to a limited degree for U. The use of Conditional Stability Constants has given quantitative results in some cases. The methods utilized in experiments and calculations are reviewed.

The Effect of Type and Concentration of Surfactant and Ligand on Uranium (VI) Cloud-Point Extraction (CPE) from Aqueous Solutions (Short Communication)
In this article cloud-point extraction (CPE) was used with chelating agent to extract uranium from aqueous solutions. The methodology used is based on the formation of metal complexes soluble in a micellar phase of surfactant. The metal ions complexes are then extracted into the surfactant-rich phase at a temperature above the cloud-point temperature. The effect of type of surfactants and ligan...

The aim of this study was to verify susceptibility of laser flourimetry method to determine the uranium concentration in Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf water. Materials and Methods : Laser flourimetric method was used to determine...
متن کاملبررسی هیدروژئوشیمیایی اورانیوم در مناطق آیرکان و چشمه شتری با تاکید بر عوامل کمپلکسساز و شاخص اشباع کانههای اورانیوم
Uranium becomes soluble and mobile under oxidizing conditions in aqueous environment, and presence of complexing agents with uranium increase this mobility. Existence of such conditions in groundwaters of Ayrakan and Cheshmeh Shotori areas has led to oxidation, solubility and mobility of uranium minerals. Hydrogeochemical study of uranium in the study areas reveals the presence of bicarbonate i...
متن کاملMitochondrial Toxicity of Depleted Uranium: Protection by Beta-Glucan
Considerable evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the toxicity of uranyl acetate (UA), a soluble salt of depleted uranium (DU). We examined the ability of the two antioxidants, beta-glucan and butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT), to prevent UA-induced mitochondrial dysfunction using rat-isolated kidney mitochondria. Beta-glucan (150 nM) and BHT (20 nM) attenuated UA-indu...
